What is a Domain name and why do I need one?

A domain name is the unique name of your website that distinguishes it from the other sites in the Internet. The domain name is the Internet address of your website. It provides a persistent address for your site, even when it is necessary to move from one server to another and switch hosts.

Each website, e-mail account, etc, on the Internet is hosted on at least one computer (referred to as server). Each server has a unique IP address (basically a set of numbers, such as 66.135.36.166). To access a particular Internet service, one can specify its IP address in a web browser; however, because it is difficult to remember numbers, an IP address can be associated with a domain name, such as www.sen9.com. Domain names are easier to remember and to associate with a website. Imagine you had to write 64.236.16.20 instead of cnn.com!
